- Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten: 87
Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten: 87, simply known as FNAF Rewritten: 87, is an indie horror survival fangame directed by Dot-e, inspired by Scott Cawthon's Five Nights at Freddy's franchise. It is the second and final installment in the Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten series, acting as a prequel to the events of its previous release.
Acting as a reimagining of Five Nights at Freddy's 2, Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten: 87 had already been in development prior to the initial release of Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten on January 7, 2023. Dot-e continued to develop the game until releasing its initial build on February 22, 2023. Following further patches, FNAF Rewritten: 87 was planned to receive an overhaul update, mirroring the one for Five Nights at Freddy's: Rewritten. The first part of this overhaul update released on April 3, 2025, containing the first five nights, cutscenes, and minigames, while the second part is expected to implement the Epilogue night and the Extras at a later date.
The plot of Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten: 87 takes the perspective of Jeremy Fitzgerald, a stubborn night guard who takes a job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in its brand new location in 1997, a year after the initial location closed. Over the course of a week, he witnesses the animatronics spring to life, hears arcade machines calling to him, and swears that whispers call for him within the cameras. Sensing something trapped within the restaurant, he is given the opportunity to save it.
Dot-e initially envisioned Five Nights at Freddy's: Rewritten as a collection of six games, intended as re-imaginings of the first six releases in the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise. However, after realizing the considerable amount of time and effort required to bring this vision to life, Dot-e ultimately announced her intention to create just three games. Following the release of Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten: 87, Dot-e officially stated that this would be her final work related to the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, cancelling Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten: Missing Children. Instead, she planned to repurpose the overarching story concept developed for future original projects.

Gameplay[]
Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten: 87 is a reimagining of Five Nights at Freddy's 2, set within the same relative environment and featuring similar gameplay mechanics. Players find themselves in an Office with three entry points: a long hallway leading to the other side of the restaurant and two open ventilation ducts through which animatronics can enter. The player also has access to the Cameras, which include two maps that can be toggled. However, as of the release of the Overhaul Part 1 update, the second toggled map currently serves no purpose. Five key points on the cameras are highlighted, with four indicated in green to show where open breaker boxes are located and one in yellow to indicate the Prize Corner, which the player must regulate at all times.

Gen 2 Bonnie in the Office.
Starting from Night 1, Gen 2 Bonnie activates shortly after the Show Stage falls and makes his way toward the Office. He moves into the Game Area, progresses through the Employees Hallway, and eventually heads toward Party Room 4. After walking through the hallway and past the player, he enters Party Room 2. Eventually, he leaves and attempts to reach the player through the right ventilation shaft in the Office. Bonnie can be seen on the Party Room 3 camera as he kneels down to enter the Right Vent. When he crawls into the Office, he appears in the right vent illuminated by the Flashlight. The player must don the mask to counteract him; if they fail to do so, he will jumpscare the player.

Gen 2 Chica on the Left Vent camera.
Alongside Bonnie, Gen 2 Chica will activate, making her way toward the Office after leaving the Show Stage in the Prize Corner. She progresses into the Game Area and reaches the Office via the center hallway by entering the Main Hall. Upon leaving the Main Hall, she will stand in the center hallway before walking into Kitchen, which provides her access to the left vent leading to the Office. She will appear on the Left Hall camera before eventually crawling into the Office. The player must don the mask to counteract her; otherwise, they will face a jumpscare.

Toy Freddy on the Old Parts & Service camera.
Finally, Gen 2 Freddy will sporadically activate throughout the night. He does not retain his old mechanics from the pre-Overhaul update. Instead, he serves as a unique antagonist tied to the breaker boxes located within the restaurant, indicated by the green camera buttons. Periodically, Gen 2 Freddy can be heard laughing, signaling that he is preparing to sabotage the player's power on either the Old Parts & Service, Kitchen, Employees Hallway, or Parts & Service cameras. The player must locate Gen 2 Freddy and use the Camera flashlight on him to counteract his actions. Failure to do so will result in him cutting the power, requiring the player to fix it while dealing with active animatronics.
Starting from Night 2, Gen 1 Foxy (or Withered Foxy) will be the first Generation 1 animatronic to activate. He will occasionally leave the Old Parts & Service room and make his way into the Office via the center hallway. As advised by the Phone Guy, the player must use the Flashlight to counteract him, temporarily sending him back.

The Mangle preparing to enter the Office.
While intended to activate on Night 2, The Mangle will actually activate on Night 3. During his phone call, Phone Guy explains how to counteract it. The Mangle starts inactive on the Kids Cove camera but can make its way through either the Parts & Service camera into the Prize Corner or, alternatively, enter the Parts & Service and proceed toward the Game Area camera. Eventually, it will enter the Employees Hallway, move into Party Room 4, and then stand in the center hallway. Later, it will enter in the Office and, periodically, lunge down and stare at the player twice, and the player must don the mask to counteract it.

Gen 1 Chica standing in the Office.
Starting from Night 3, Gen 1 Bonnie and Gen 1 Chica will exit the Old Parts & Service and make their way toward the Office via the center hallway. Both animatronics will exit from the Main Hall camera but will take different paths to reach the same location. At one point, Gen 1 Bonnie will exit the Main Hall, enter Party Room 2, and then detour into Party Room 3, eventually appearing to the left of the player's center hallway.
On the other hand, Gen 1 Chica will enter Party Room 4 from the Main Hall, proceed into the Kitchen, and then stand in the center hallway to the right. Eventually, one of the animatronics will enter the Office, requiring the player to don the mask to counteract them. Failure to do so will result in a jumpscare.

Gen 1 Freddy standing in the Office.
Starting from Night 4, the remaining two animatronics, Gen 1 Freddy and Balloon Boy, will activate. Balloon Boy will leave the Game Area and, shortly thereafter, appear in one of the two vents in the Office. Depending on which direction his voice is heard from, the player must use the Flashlight to send him away. Gen 1 Freddy will leave the Main Hall after exiting the Old Parts & Service and will enter Party Room 2 before moving into Party Room 1. He will then stand in the hallway, and as he approaches the Office, the player must don the Freddy Mask to counter him.

The Puppet preparing to leave on the Prize Corner camera.
Throughout the entire game, The Puppet will be located on the Prize Corner camera. The player must ensure she doesn’t leave her prize box by consistently rewinding the music box to keep her at bay, similar to her predecessor. Unlike her original counterpart, the music meter will go down faster, even as the winding occurs more quickly. If the player allows the music box to go unwound, they will have only a few seconds to reset her back to sleep, as she takes a moment to leave the Prize Corner camera. If she successfully leaves and the player fails to keep her at bay, she will jumpscare the player.
Additionally, if the player chooses to pursue the Good Ending route, The Puppet will begin to sabotage the player by placing Shadow Bonnie sprites that block access to vital cameras, including those where Toy Freddy may appear, as well as the Prize Corner camera, the Wind-up button, and the Flashlight button. The player can simply click on these sprites to access the cameras.

The Opening Cutscene.
The plot of Five Nights at Freddy's: Rewritten: 87 follows Jeremy Fitzgerald, an amateur who takes a summer job at Utah's Freddy Fazbear's Pizza as a night-guard. Prior to the events of the game, a Freddy Fazbear's Pizza restaurant featuring the "Generation 1" animatronics ran until 1996, when it was closed due to "various security concerns." The opening cutscene of FNAF Rewritten: 87 reveals that these concerns stemmed from the disappearance of children. The cutscene depicts a child being lured into a backstage room by William Afton wearing a Spring Bonnie costume, ultimately leading to the child being stuffed into the Generation 1 Freddy costume.
A year later, in 1997, a new company purchased the restaurant with the intent to remodel it from the ground up, honoring the memories of Freddy & Friends despite the previous owners wishes. This led to the introduction of the "Generation 2" animatronics, which featured advanced security measures to address the issues that had caused the closure of the 1996 location. Fitzgerald starts his job just as the remodeled restaurant opens in the summer of 1987.

The Puppet interrupting the minigame.
Throughout Jeremy Fitzgerald's shift, the animatronics quickly spring to life, prompting Fitzgerald to document the strange phenomena in his Employee Handbook, including details shared by the Phone Guy, who he increasingly grows skeptical of. After his first shift, Fitzgerald discovers an active arcade cabinet. Upon opening it, he finds a game where the player, controlling a car, must collect a series of balloons scattered throughout the map. Halfway through the game, a glitch in a wall appears, and if the player pursues it, they are led into a minigame depicting Charlotte Emily's tragic death. This leads to The Puppet summoning, where the player, now controlling William Afton, interacts with Charlotte's body located directly in front of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.
Suddenly, The Puppet interrupts the minigame sprites to question Jeremy Fitzgerald, threatening him to "stop looking further", otherwise, she will ensure he cannot do so. She expresses her desire not to have the player "take this away from them," referring to the chance for a second life through the Generation 1 animatronics, who include Gabriel Anderson, Jeremy Brown, Fritz Davis, Susie Williams, and Cassidy Johnson.
If the player chooses to pursue the Good Ending, Jeremy Fitzgerald must play through three remaining arcade machines that illustrate William Afton abducting and concealing their deaths. The fourth and final arcade cabinet showcases The Puppet's process of giving life to Gabriel, Jeremy, Fritz, and Susie through Freddy, Bonnie, Foxy, and Chica, respectively. As the player controls The Puppet in giving life to all four children, she interrupts the minigame once more, questioning why the player continues engaging with the arcade cabinets despite her warnings. She expresses her concern over the cabinets detailing their backstories and claims that she must eliminate Jeremy Fitzgerald for uncovering the truth.

The Puppet confronting Jeremy Fitzgerald again.
The Puppet accuses Fitzgerald of wanting to strip the children of their chance at freedom and assumes he seeks to continue William Afton's legacy, denying them their second opportunity at life without proper resolution. She asserts that she will not allow Fitzgerald's actions to go unanswered, vowing to do everything in her power to prevent the player from leaving the restaurant that very night. Jeremy Fitzgerald manages to complete that shift, however the Phone Guy asks for him to be present at one last birthday party held at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza before the police investigate the location due to brand new leads surrounding the disappearance of the aforementioned victims.
Beyond this point, as established in the initial release of Five Nights at Freddy's: Rewritten: 87, The Mangle is responsible for the Bite of 1987, evidenced by the significant amount of blood found within her jaw. That Saturday night, Michael Afton, the protagonist of Five Nights at Freddy's: Rewritten, returns after Jeremy Fitzgerald's night shift and discovers that the animatronics are possessed, despite having been previously informed that their behavior was merely the result of malfunctions or technical errors. It is also important to note that, unlike the events of the Overhaul update, Mike Schmidt is able to play the arcade cabinets in the outdated canon, in contrast to Jeremy Fitzgerald. The detailed plot points may be retconned or heavily altered within the Overhaul Part 2 update of Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten: 87.

Reception[]
Upon its initial release in 2023, the game was heavily praised and even considered to be a masterpiece. At the time, many fans considered the game a masterpiece, praising its visuals, fast-paced gameplay, and storyline, especially after the Night 7 Update, which implemented a post-Bite of 1987 Mangle. The game only received minor critiques regarding the controls, difficulty, system requirements, and various bugs that were later fixed through patches. However, with the release of the Five Nights at Freddy's Rewritten Overhaul Update, the game aged poorly, as many players returned to comment on its grainy, uninspired visuals and gameplay that failed to offer anything special aside from minor features like Toy Freddy and the difficulty curve with the Withered Animatronics. Overall, the game felt overly easy until the final nights, where the difficulty ramped significantly. Dot-e later attributed the games uninspired, buggy state due to her having rushed the development, even going so far as to describe the development process as a "nightmare" that she didn't wish to revisit.[1]
Following the release of the Overhaul Update, which garnered much praise leading up to its launch due to its teasers, high-quality atmospheres, and notable presence on Vonii's FNAFMAS 2024 Christmas Stream, many fans heavily praised the game similarly to its initial release, resulting in widespread acclaim for the game, thanks to its captivating atmospheres, engaging narrative that serves as a prequel to Five Nights at Freddy's: Rewritten, and its faithful yet unique gameplay. Dot-e's efforts in crafting the atmospheres and animatronic designs were particularly applauded, with many appreciating the high-effort re-imaginings of Freddy & Friends. Unique design elements, such as the implementation of clothing, hair, overalls, and especially the rough state of the Withered Animatronics, were highlighted for being both disturbing and visually pleasing.
Each atmosphere was meticulously crafted all located within a re-imagined version of Five Nights at Freddy's 2, which introduced an element of unpredictability to the gameplay. Additionally, the storytelling aspect of the Overhaul Update received widespread praise, particularly during the Good Ending route, where The Puppet's intrusions and glitches throughout the minigames served as key highlights. While still relatively similar to Five Nights at Freddy's 2, the gameplay of FNAF Rewritten: 87 was praised for being stress-inducing, enhanced by unique inclusions such as Toy Freddy's mechanics, rapid sequences where multiple animatronics attacked simultaneously, and the highly anticipated Night 6, which featured a special iteration of The Mangle post-Bite of 1987. Some fans had issues with the game being too easy or too difficult upon release, however.
Overall, Five Nights at Freddy's: Rewritten: 87 had a rocky start, but it still received considerable praise. Following the release of the Overhaul Part 1 update, many fans had a high-quality game to commend, in stark contrast to the initial release, which suffered from uninspired gameplay, designs, and a plethora of bugs and optimization issues that fans failed to critique. The Overhaul update introduced a brand new map with sophisticated atmospheres and a unique reimagining of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. The animatronic designs remained memorable, highlighting various aspects of character design that originated from Scott Cawthon or were popularized in Five Nights at Freddy's: Rewritten. The gameplay, while still heavily faithful to Five Nights at Freddy's 2, was widely praised for its unique inclusions and fast-paced, stress-inducing mechanics.
