Five Nights at Friedrich's is an indie point-and-click fangame developed by ryon, inspired by Scott Cawthon's Five Nights at Freddy's franchise. It is a goofy hand-drawn parody of Five Nights at Freddy's containing a blend of both serious and unserious elements through its unique gameplay, story, and additional content such as minigames, trophies, and more.

Initially a game developer, Ryon was motivated to create his own fangame following the release of the Five Nights at Freddy's official film. He first revealed his project on his X/Twitter account, where it quickly gained significant attention and a dedicated fangame community following the demo was released on June 7, 2024. On April 26, 2025, during a livestream, Ryon officially announced that the game was estimated to be released on June 27, 2025. He also promised that the game would include three brand-new antagonists, two new characters, collectibles, minigames, secrets, and much more.

The plot of Five Nights at Friedrich's follows Alan Fritter, who takes a job at Friedrich's Pizza, only to discover that the animatronics hide darker secrets than they appear. Towards the end of the game, Alan Fritter confronts an overwhelming force who recognizes him that manages to trap him within a suit. The latter half of the game shifts perspective to Ella Vanilla, who takes the role of the new night-guard hired to watch over the pizzeria.

FAQs

Will there be a mobile version?

Android port is a possibility if there's enough demand for it, but I wouldn't work on it until AFTER the full game is out. No iOS version because it would be very difficult to develop and even harder for anyone to install it. Blame Apple!! The demo will not be ported anywhere.

Why are they German?

I liked the name Friedrich, and decided to lean into it for the others.

Gameplay

Five Nights at Friedrich's is a parody of Five Nights at Freddy's, featuring both familiar and unique mechanics that tests player's ability to manage multiple threats simultaneously, rather than relying on a single main mechanic to counter most animatronics. The player is placed within an Office equipped with two laser doors and a Friedpad, allowing them to monitor various locations and access different systems, such as the Vent lasers and the Kitchen cooking button. Additionally, the player has access to the Sprinklers, which can lower the building's temperature if needed at the cost of all mechanics to experience short delays due to a raise in moisture content, requiring the player to unclog the mechanism before it activates. During each night, the player will be provided a Reading which guides the player through the newly-introduced antagonist(s).

Starting from Night 1, Bernard Das Karnickel becomes active. He is one of three animatronics initially visible on the Show Stage camera before traversing the pizzeria to reach the player. Bernard can take two different pathways toward the Office, having a 50/50 chance to either enter the Dining Area or Felix’s Casino. If he enters Dining Area, he will proceed into the West Hallway before attempting to enter the Office. On the other hand, if he enters Felix's Casino, he will progress into the East Hallway and shortly thereafter appear in the Office. While in the Office, Bernard will reach his hand through the door before stepping inside, waiting for the player to either open the cameras or stare at him for an extended period before jumpscaring them. The player must use the Laser Doors to shock his arm and prevent him from entering.

Clara Das Küken activates alongside Bernard starting from Night 1, beginning on the Show Stage before leaping off to sabotage the player. When activated, she will move into the Kitchen camera, where she can be seen cooking a pizza. Eventually, she will complete the pizza and attempt to cook it further, which leads to her setting the kitchen on fire. The fire will then spread to the player's Office, raising the building temperature and requiring the player to use the Sprinklers to extinguish the flames. If the temperature in the Office rises too high, Clara will jumpscare the player. To prevent her from setting the building on fire, the player must periodically select the Kitchen camera and select the Cook button.

On Night 2, Felix Der Schlaufuchs becomes active and starts on his own camera, Felix's Casino. Depending on the difficulty setting, the player will have a predetermined number of times they can flip up the camera before Felix rushes toward the Office and stands in the doorway, blocking access to the Laser button. It is clarified that Felix is fixated on the spinning wheel on his camera within his dedicated reading page. In order to prevent Felix from allowing any other animatronics inside the Office, the player must press the spin wheel button on Felix's camera to send him back to his starting position.

Alongside Felix, Endoskelett activates as an inactive endoskeleton located on the Parts & Service camera. Upon activation, Endoskelett will either enter the West Hallway or East Hallway and shortly thereafter manifest through the corresponding Office door. The player must use the Laser to send Endoskelett away, and he will retreat back into either the Parts and Service or Supply Closet cameras, restarting his cycle and attacking from that side of the building. If Endoskelett manages to enter the Office, he will permanently affect the power usage meter, preventing it from decreasing. Upon the power usage reaching its maximum, he will jumpscare the player.

On Night 3, Friedrich Fazbär activates from the Show Stage. Despite being bolted to the stage, Friedrich will be seen leaping upward toward the ventilation system upon activation. While crawling through the vent camera, he will progress through three distinct states before reaching a position directly atop the Office. During his third phase, the player must use the Laser button on the Vent camera to burn Friedrich's head, temporarily sending him back to the stage. However, failure to do so will result in Friedrich reaching the Office and swinging from the ceiling before swaying towards the the player and jumpscaring them.

Interesting, during Night 4, the player will experience a power outage and must survive in the dark. Upon completing this night, however, an unknown entity will manifest in the Office and roar at the player, causing Alan Fritter to be flung backwards and become trapped inside a green-tinted suit, ultimately resulting in him being springlocked by the suit. However, at the start of Night 5, Alan Fritter will be reborn through the suit and use his newfound capabilities to defend himself against the new antagonist, revealing himself to be Goldenfriedrich. Goldenfriedrich has three mechanics tied to his appearance, exploiting all entrances to the Office in an attempt to breach it.

Upon posing a threat, Goldenfriedrich can be heard teleporting throughout the location. He can reach the player through three methods:

  • If the camera interface begin to flash purple, the player must locate Goldenfriedrich on the cameras and wait for him to disappear in order to counteract him. Failure to do so will result in him setting the building on fire.
  • If he is heard laughing upon teleporting, he can be located in two locations and, if not countered, will jumpscare the player:
    • Goldenfriedrich may be peering through the western doorway in the Office, requiring the player to use the door lasers.
    • Goldenfriedrich may be peering through the eastern doorway in the Office, requiring the player to use the door lasers.
    • Goldenfriedrich may be located on the Vent camera, requiring the player to use the lasers on him. This position can be distinguished through a louder sound cue of him laughing.
  • If the audio begins to deepen, Goldenfriedrich can be found standing directly in front of the player in the Office, requiring the player to hit him on the head. Failure to do so will result in a jumpscare.

Upon completing Night 5, the player will gain access to Night 6, which introduces FritterFalle as a new antagonist.

During this night, the player must hold their mouse on FritterFalle periodically while he sits in the Office permanently. If FritterFalle's aggression reaches its peak, he will disable all mechanics involving power usage, including the Friedpad, Lasers, and other systems.

Plot

The plot of Five Nights at Friedrich's is set within Friedrich's Pizza, a series of establishments (not considered a chain according to ryon) owned by an unnamed company with origins dating back to 1983, with the introduction of springlock suits. However, the company began garnering attention following the introduction of their animatronic technology on Obglober 5, 2004. Originally, the animatronics featured playful, child-friendly designs with significant signs of their robotic identity with details such as exposed wiring and fixated pupils. One particular location, known as F-PA09, is considered the worst of all the sites. At some point, all the animatronics were transferred from another location, F-NJ02 (retconning F-NJ05 in the demo), to the current F-PA09 setting.

Notably, the service manual from the transfer reveals that the animatronics, considered to be apart of an experimental line of animatronics under the "05-Series" label, were disturbingly documented to contain limbs of unknown origin belonging to humans, including human eyes and teeth for Friedrich, human eyes for Felix, an amalgamation of humanoid mass within Bernard, human arms and fleshy interiors for Clara, and humanoid teeth and veins for Endoskelett. As a result, Friedrich’s Pizzeria Member Handbook was altered to accommodate the practices exhibited by the animatronics at F-PA09, implying that this location is the only setting where these particular incarnations of the animatronics are found.

Various events transpire prior to the events of Five Nights at Friedrich's, including Bernard destroying Felix, resulting in his body being heavily mutilated and Felix's entire torso and arms being defunct. Upon being transferred to the new location, Felix was placed within his own casino as a mere standing prop on his stage, remaining fixated on the spinning wheel. Due to employees being instructed to cease any repairs on the animatronics, they gradually begin to lose their child-friendly designs and increasingly exhibit signs of their humanoid parts.

Later, on Flinguary 29, 2009, an individual named Alan Fritter takes a job involving Friedrich's Pizza. Details about this job are unknown, however the animatronics seemingly retain memories of past events about Alan Fritter and keep his presence in mind. At an unknown point afterward, Alan Fritter returns to the location upon its opening, determined to work there. He persistently slaps the windows of the establishment until he is hired as the night-guard. His motives for seeking this job remain unclear, but it soon becomes evident that the animatronics remember him and are intent on killing him.

Meanwhile, all manuals meant to guide Alan on how to survive are crumpled, and signs of previous guards going missing become apparent as various sarcastic messages written in yellow fill the papers mocking the animatronics and rumoring about the nature of the animatronics. The animatronics seem to take joy in tormenting and killing guards at the location. For example, Clara prides herself on using Fritter's mutilated body to cook her first successful pizza with his parts. Bernard uses Alan’s arm as a back-scratcher, Friedrich uses his nerves as floss, and Endoskelett uses the remaining carcass of his body as a suit.

Towards the end of his shift, Alan Fritter is confronted by Goldenfriedrich, a metaphysical entity that delivers the final blow and traps Alan within an unknown animatronic suit, known as Fritterfalle. This suit ensnares him completely. On his fifth and final day, Goldenfriedrich attempts to gain full control over Alan Fritter inside the suit, but realizes that Alan retains control over the animatronic. To seize his entire body and be victorious, Goldenfriedrich begins the process of wiping Fritter’s entire memory. Throughout Night 5, Alan Fritter fights off Goldenfriedrich and the other animatronics as his memories gradually fade. Despite successfully defending himself, his memory is ultimately wiped. Management later finds his body, however rather than disposing of it, they leave it in the Office for technicians to test, instructing future guards to hold its nose to sedate it.

Starting on Mulch 5 of that same year, Ella Vanilla discovers a job flyer in the local newspaper, considering taking a position as a night guard at Friedrich's Pizza. Despite ironically stating that the job might force her into life-or-death situations, she successfully secures the position and fills in for Alan Fritter during his intended sixth shift. During her night, she notices various signs of his presence, most notably his lanyard, yet continues with her job obliviously avoiding the disturbing nature of the animatronics. Additionally, through the Extras menu, it is implied that Alan Fritter remains somewhat conscious within the Fritterfalle animatronic to a degree, as he responds to her comments found within the Collectibles section of the game. At one point, he entrusts her with holding an unknown item appearing as a snapped object with a white and blue striped pattern whose origins are tied to an unidentified entity.

Beyond this point, the story becomes largely ambiguous, other than non-canon scenarios within the Custom Night, achieved by completing 7/20 Mode with all Challenges. These include Management wishing for Vanilla to become the permanent night-guard at Friedrich's Pizza, Fritter being fired due to his predicament not being canon (as FrittleFalle co-exists in that same timeline), and Management commenting on how Fritterfalle acts as a great guard.

Reception

Initially, Five Nights at Friedrich's did not receive much attention during its early development stages. While it garnered significant support on platforms like X/Twitter, where it was first announced, interest in its GameJolt page remained limited until the release of its demo. Following the demo's launch, numerous content creators such as Dawko, FusionZGamer, 8-Bit Ryan, and others played and enjoyed the game. Many players also praised its unique art style, engaging gameplay loop, and the promise of additional content in the future. Throughout its development, this future content was revealed to include minigames, challenges, trophies, three new antagonists, two new playable guards, and more.

Following its release on June 27, 2025, the game had already cultivated a dedicated community that eagerly anticipated its launch. Upon release, fans continued to praise Five Nights at Friedrich's art style and gameplay while enjoying the newly-implemented unique soundtrack, cutscenes, and extensive post-game content. From its inception, many compared Five Nights at Friedrich's to earlier hand-drawn fangames, particularly One Night at Flumpty's by Jonochrome, which Ryon acknowledged as an inspiration for some aspects of the game. The gameplay loop was stated by many to be highly engaging, featuring silly introductions through Readings and requiring players to manage multiple antagonists simultaneously in quick succession. The new soundtrack was widely praised by players, content creators, and fans alike, especially during Night 5, which introduced a memorable twist boss fight which some consider one of the best boss battles in the Five Nights at Freddy’s fangame community. Finally, many dedicated fans enjoyed the amount of post-game content, which enticed fans to continue exploring the game, uncover secrets, complete challenges, and find easter eggs referencing inside jokes from the community. Smaller details, such as the cutscenes, overall difficulty, and references to other media both related and unrelated to the game, were also highly appreciated.

However, the game's release also received criticism from new players. While many loved the game, some found the latter half of the main campaign to be particularly challenging. Night 4 was considered difficult by players who hadn’t paid close attention to the game's mechanics, and Night 5 was stated to be too difficult or too vague, especially involving the mechanics involving the boss fight. Night 6 was often described as overly difficult, as it required the player to manage all previous animatronics along with the new addition demanded constant attention.

Overall, Five Nights at Friedrich's is considered by many to be one of the best Five Nights at Freddy’s fangames of the year. In fact, some fans consider it their favorite fangame of all time, particularly those deeply involved within its community. Its wacky art style, engaging gameplay, memorable soundtrack, cutscenes, and extensive post-campaign content appealed to a wide audience including casual players, max-mode players, and dedicated fans alike. Despite this, the game received some criticism due to some believing the game became too difficult toward the end of the campaign.

  • Five Nights at Friedrich's was illustrated entirely in Clip Studio Paint, featuring nearly 1000+ hand-drawn frames.[1]
    • Its art direction takes inspiration from the old-school Newgrounds media and early 2000s Flash games, combined with elements partially influenced by One Night at Flumpty's by Jonochrome.[1][2]
      • When asked if he would regret the creation of the game, Ryon clarified that the art style comes naturally to him, hence he chose to use this style throughout the game rather than attempting to work on something more realistic.[3]
    • The animatronic designs are based on their archetypes compared to their original counterparts. For example, Bernard is big and fast because Bonnie is considered aggressive.[4]

  • Five Nights at Friedrich's was created with the intention of being a standalone game. However, a sequel has been conceptualized in the past by Ryon which he is uncertain about whether he wants to pursue it. Additionally, he has expressed interest in creating a smaller-scale game and has ideas for potential content updates for the base game as well.[1]
  • The decision for all the animatronics to be "half-machine, half-flesh" was simply a result of Ryon's enjoyment in drawing various humanoid features like teeth and flesh, combined with his passion for illustrating mechanical designs.[1]
  • Ryon's favorite character in Five Nights at Friedrich's has changed over time. Initially, Bernard was his favorite because of his eyes, teeth, and overall vibe. However, as Ryon worked on Clara's positions in the Kitchen, he found her to be cute, which shifted his preference. Later, he grew fond of Friedrich, especially after depicting him being burnt by the Lasers. As he worked on Felix, Ryon considered him a "cute dog" while he enjoyed animating him running towards the Office.[1]
    • As of its definitive release, Ryon's current favorite character remains indecisive due to elements both incorporated within the game and in his mind. He specifically has a soft spot for Bernard, Friedrich, Alan Fritter, and Goldenfriedrich.
  • The game was initially planned to use doors instead of lasers. However, as Five Nights at Friedrich's evolved, particularly with the game design decision to make doors instantly block the animatronics, ryon decided to implement lasers instead.[1]

  • Following the creation of any Five Nights at Friedrich’s-inspired fan media being published, a new establishment is created in the universe as a rival restaurant toward Friedrich’s Pizza.   • Dinosaurs existed in the Five Nights at Friedrich's universe during the 1900s.[9]
