This article or segment of the article is deemed controversial, whether due to its developer actions or the game’s content. The wiki aims to document this game and describe it in neutral terms while not participating in the controversy nor showing a support for the developer.
Reason: The original version included a character named Sugar the Cat, who was stolen by Tyler from Emil Macko without his permission. This caused some backlash until Sugar was removed for the game's rebranding in January 2015.

The Return To Freddy's, formerly known as Five Nights at Freddy's 3 Fan-Made, is an indie point-and-click survival horror video game developed by Tyler Ahlström, inspired by Scott Cawthon's Five Nights at Freddy's franchise. This game uses assets from both Five Nights at Freddy's games since Tyler didn't know how to make models at the time.

The plot for The Return To Freddy's follows a protagonist named Mike Schmidt, who takes a position as a night guard for Freddy Fazbear's Pizza until he is eventually fired for tampering with the animatronics. During his shift, the animatronics began to hunt him down and attempted to reach two doorways and the ceiling vent within the office.

According to Tyler, this game was created for fun and was not meant to be taken seriously when he was 14 years old. Following its release, the GameJolt page gained popularity within the first 5 hours, as users began to follow and like the game, and YouTubers uploaded their playthroughs. However, the game has become infamous due to the Candy the Cat character that was stolen from Emil Macko without permission and renamed Sugar the Cat.[1] The game was later removed due to Scott Cawthon's request until it was brought back after its rebranding.

Description[]

~ PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION BEFORE PLACING A COMMENT ~

This is the "Official" fan-made Five Nights at Freddy's 3 game (Which took me a month to make and effected my health from staying up until 4 in the morning every time). This game has nothing to do with the Five Nights at Freddy's series by Scott Cawthon. (Well... It kind of does...) Yes, Scott Cawthon did approve of this. I promised to add many exciting easter eggs, death mini-games, and cutscenes! And yes, there is a night 6 and a custom night. This game will be officially released to the public on Christmas Day (So, GameJolters, this is your lucky day to have early access!). I hope you enjoy this game, and have a Merry Christmas! This game is made with the same software Scott Cawthon uses, Clickteam Fusion 2.5. :) Also, about the toxic meter, it goes up pretty fast now, that is actually what I intended. You have to be quick when they are in the office, and quick on taking it off so you don't die!. :)

~ STORY ~

When Mike Schmidt was just about to quit his job, he found an article on the news paper mentioning the animatronics being fixed: The "Ever So Popular" Pizzeria's animatronics have been fixed and repaired at last! They have also fixed and brought back everyone's favorite Pirate Fox, Foxy. The murderer of the four missing children and one missing child has yet to be found. They have also brought something from the old pizzeria. Something to bring back to the hopes and joys of children and grown ups alike! But the building has yet to be cleaned... Not responsible for injury/dismemberment. $150.00 a week. To apply call 1-888-FAZ-FAZBEAR. For more information on some back story, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gk-aCL6eyGc

~ CONTROLS ~

To go into windowed mode, press F11. To go into full screen, press F12. The same familiar controls from Five Nights 1 & 2. Press and hold CTRL for hallway and vent lights. Press F5 to save, and press F6 to load, it won't make any sounds when you save or load, but it still works! :) The save/data file is called "FNAF3_Data", so please don't delete it unless you want to start all over. Automatic saving does not work because it crashes the game. ONLY use the mask when they are in your office, If you use it when they aren't in your office they will recognize you and the mask trick wont work anymore. :) If you want to know the story behind this game, hear the phone call, observe the game, and everything else very carefully. Since Five Nights 2 is a prequel, this game takes place after Five Nights 1. :) Have Fun on your first night!

~ HELP & TIPS ~

You have to be quick when it comes to the animatronics getting into the officE. Also, listen to the phone calls, thEy give helpful tips and tell storyline. Also use the mask on each aniMatronic one at a time. If you use the mask instantly when you start, your pretty much screwed. Later in the story line, "Phone Guy" mentions the doors and lights not working very well, considering the fact that Foxy on the first game kept banging on The doors. The lights don't work because the animatronics are more stealthy than before. So in other words, the doors and lightS are just there for fun and to make the game look good. lol :P Just a heads up, the animatronics get more aggresive the second time they come. So be VERY VERY VERY quick on the mask. To know when the Marionette is in your office, the monitors in the office should go crAzy and show Marionette's face on all of them, and you should also hear the jack-in-the-box music too. To Toggle into Windowed Mode, Press F11. To Toggle into Full Screen, Press F12.

~ BUG REPORTING ~

Hey guys! There has been reports of bug going on, and I want to essure you i'm the only one working on this gaMe, and i'm trying the best I can to fix as many bugs as I can before the official release. If there are any bugs you find along the way, please report it to mE as soon as possible. Thanks! Also, the doors and lightS not working is part of the story line if hear every phone call closely.

~ THEORIES ~

(I already know the story line, I'm just making up good theories).

:Why is Phone Guy still alive?
:Who is Phone Guy?
:Why is there something, or some"one" mysterious on some"thing".
:Why is Bonnie's arm off?
:Why does Chica look like a hogi when she's in the office? (Hogi is my way of saying homeless girl)
:Why does the Marionette go after the animatronics first, and not you?
:Why does the cutscenes say, "IT'S ME"?!?

So much mysteries behind this game you guys don't know... Have Fun on your first night! :)

Development[]

On December 23, 2014, Tyler released the first iteration of the game under the title "Five Nights at Freddy's 3," before the official FNaF 3 was released in March 2015. While some users realized it was a fan-made version, others assumed it was the official FNaF 3 and complained to Scott Cawthon. Following its release, Tyler made several posts regarding bug fixes that occurred in the game.[2]

Due to widespread confusion and criticism surrounding the game and its name, Tyler changed the name to "Five Nights at Freddy's 3 FAN-MADE" to avoid confusion. However, Scott Cawthon contacted Tyler in his email to change the game's name completely so that no more possible confusion could occur. Tyler decided to rename the game "The Return to Freddy's," which was released under that name in January 2015.[3]

Gameplay[]

The gameplay is simple. However, there are some bugs in the game that make it quite difficult. The player has a monitor that allows them to keep an eye on the animatronics' movements on each camera before moving through the office. The doors can be used to prevent each animatronic from entering, but they are almost entirely useless. This is because the doors are damaged by Foxy, and the player only defends themselves with the Freddy Mask instead.

If an animatronic enters the office, the player must put on the Freddy mask immediately. If it is too late, the animatronic will attack and kill the player. However, if the mask is worn for too long, the toxic meter fills up due to the toxic elements inside the mask, resulting in the Game Over screen. The player must keep an eye on the power if they use the cameras for too long.

Major Updates and Reboot[]

This game, and all of the other games from Volume 1, would have received a major update in 2016. This would've included original models, new mechanics, minigames, and more. However, these updates were eventually scrapped, the new models and changes never being shown. According to Toonster, Tyler showed him during a Skype call the .mfa file of the updated TRTF Classic, which had completely nothing done yet.

These major updates were eventually cancelled. However, they were reinstated for a time in 2017 and put under the control of TannerFeline until they were cancelled once again. In 2018, Tyler had actually wanted to and started remaking all of the TRTF Volume 1 games, including TRTF Classic, which was going to use The Return to Freddy's: Chapter One animatronic models along with some other new assets. However, it was eventually cancelled when Tyler decided to remove all the FNaF characters and assets from the game and to make the game its own unique intellectual property, "The Road That Falls."

Reception[]

Initially, when it was known as Five Nights at Freddy's 3, the game received coverage from large parts of the Five Nights at Freddy's community, with the game being played by big YouTubers such as CoryxKenshin and FusionZGamer. Reception was generally mixed due to the game's reuse of assets from the previous two games in the series.

In the modern era of the fangame community, The Return to Freddy's still stands as one of the biggest games in the community, with many fan-made remakes and reboots of the series being made, such as The Return to Freddy's Rebuilt, Five Nights at Freddy's 3: Anniversary Edition, Five Nights at Freddy's 3 (2014), and so many more that are still being released to this day.

Trivia[]

  • This game was once known as the fan-made version of Five Nights at Freddy's 3. It was made before the official FNaF 3. Since the name was changed to The Return To Freddy's, a lot of things were removed.
  • This is the only game has not to be made in Clickteam Fusion 2.5, it was instead made using an earlier version of Clickteam made before Clickteam Fusion 2.5 known as "The Games Factory 2".
  • The game had a trailer made for it when it was known as "Five Nights at Freddy's 3" that heavily utilized footage from Garry's Mod. However, the trailer has long since been lost.[4]
  • Shadow Puppet is actually Shadow Lockjaw, as it looked like a "Shadow Puppet" as Tyler did not know how to model at that time.
